Gender in Afghanistan

Inequality is a profound and prevalent issue in Afghanistan, as reflected in a ranking of 169 out of 188 on the Gender Inequality Index (GII) 2018. The GII measures inequalities in the areas of reproductive health, empowerment and economic activity. Inequality in Afghanistan is a feature of gender relations in both the public and private spheres.

Background

Organization for Social Transformation of Afghan Communities

The Organization for Social Transformation of Afghan Communities– (OSTAC) is a local Non-profit Organization registered under the Ministry of Economy

(Registration Number 4820). The organization was initiated by a group of professional women in various fields. The professional women organized themselves to contribute to the social cause through the interventions among the communities in need. The organization is committed to address the present social and educational problems in different villages, districts, cities and provinces     through their intervention in the communities ensuring people’s participation in decision making process. . Social Work principles being guiding principles of the organization has oriented the organization to aim at the social work value “help people to help themselves”. OSTAC aims at community development promoting holistic growth through education, economic activities, awareness and sustainable livelihood.
OSTAC is committed to support the communities in great need and accompany them through the difficult situations.

Program Implementation

OSTAC responded to the emergency needs of the communities through the interventions supported by local contribution of the well-wishers. The volunteers garnered support to reach out to the neediest in the place of
intervention. In addition to the physical activities, OSTAC professionals contributed to the wellbeing of the communities through advocacy efforts at various sectors and levels.

MECHANISAM FOR FRAUDAND CORRUPTION AND SAFEGUARD

OSTAC Develop a comprehensive code of ethics that outlines the expected behavior of all individuals associated with OSTAC, including employees, volunteers, board members, and contractors. The code emphasize integrity, honesty, respect, and impartiality in all actions and decision-making processes

OSTAC Designs and implement a clear and concise anti-fraud policy that defines fraudulent activities, establishes reporting mechanisms, and emphasizes the consequences for engaging in such behavior. This policy should cover various forms of fraud, including misappropriation of funds, kickbacks, bribery, and insider trading

OSTAC Creates a safe and confidential mechanism for individuals to report suspected cases of fraud, corruption, or other unethical behavior. Encourage the use of anonymous reporting channels, such as hotlines or dedicated email addresses, to protect whistleblowers from retaliation and ensure their confidentiality.

Program Implementation

Covid-19 pandemic response: OSTAC team raised awareness on COVID-19 pandemic prevention and care through Masjids and community leaders to the people in 6 locations of Kabul and Parwan, provinces. Awareness through social media was a tool used to disseminate factual information on COVID-19 pandemic. The volunteers organized themselves to reach out to the people in need providing material support to the most vulnerable in Kabul city. Some support was raised through the contribution of businessmen and certain organizations.

Parwan Flash-flood: OSTAC immediately reached out to meet the basic needs of the people affected by flash-flood in August 2020. The flood took lives of hundreds and left hundreds homeless too. OSTAC through the social media campaign for Parwan Flash-flood, raised over 49000 AFG in cash and a large amount of material support for the people in need. The support helped over 20 families in meeting their emergency needs.
